Video shows Kakhovka Reservoir before, after Russians blow up HPP dam

After Russian troops blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, the reservoir practically ran dry.

The corresponding video was posted on Telegram by blogger Ihor Lachenkov, Ukrinform reports.

Previously, an ecologist and expert in the management of nature protection, environmental policy and monitoring, Candidate of Technical Sciences Maksym Soroka predicted that the Kakhovka Reservoir will turn into a massive swamp rather than dry out completely.

"The water will not disappear. However, now this place will become a temporary swamp. And only then will nature figure out what to do with this territory. We must understand that in our climatic conditions, a reservoir (of this size and anthropogenic load) must be at least 8m deep. This is due to three factors. First, so that it does not freeze in winter (this is important for restoring the biota). Secondly, to maintain the oxygen level in the summer. If stagnant water is overheated, then according to Dalton's law, oxygen will start evaporating, which will kill all fish. Thirdly, for neutralizing return/treated wastewater and further biological treatment, there must be a sufficient volume of water in the reservoir. Let me remind you that Zaporizhzhia factories and utility services take water above the Zaporizhzhia dam, and discharge wastewater into the Kakhovka Reservoir. Other cities do the same," he wrote.

In turn, other scientists note that after the dam was blown up, the reservoir began to go shallow and it’s now a little over 10 meters deep. That is, it is now impossible to draw water for domestic consumers and for the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

It is expected that after stabilization, at the place of the Kakhovka Reservoir, the water level will correspond to that of the Dnipro, which is 1 kilometer wide and 6-7 meters deep.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, a rescue and evacuation operation in flood-affected areas after the explosion at the Kakhovka HPP dam, carried out by Russian troops on the night of June 6, is ongoing in Kherson region.
