A Russian military intelligence agent was sentenced to 15 years in prison for collecting information about the locations of Ukraine's Defense Forces in the Chernihiv region.

According to Ukrinform, the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) reported this on its website.

"Based on the evidence collected by the Security Service, a Russian military intelligence agent (better known as the GRU) received 15 years in prison with confiscation of property for spying in the Chernihiv region at the beginning of 2025," the statement said.

The investigation found that the offender scouted the area, recorded the locations of Defense Forces, and then sent the coordinates to Russian GRU handlers via a messenger app.

The enemy was most interested in the locations of command and observation posts and the movement routes of border patrols.

The invaders also tried to find out the locations of checkpoints and logistics warehouses of Ukrainian troops.

To obtain the intelligence, Russia's military intelligence recruited a border-area resident who was looking for easy money in Telegram channels.

While scouting, he took photos of military facilities and asked acquaintances about possible positions of the Defense Forces.

Based on the agent's information, the Russians planned routes for their sabotage and reconnaissance groups to move outside the positions of Ukrainian troops.

SBU counterintelligence agents exposed the enemy's plan in advance and detained the traitor in the spring of this year.

Comprehensive measures were taken to ensure the safety of Ukrainian troops.

During the search, officers seized the smartphone the agent used to communicate with his Russian military intelligence handler.

Based on the evidence collected by SBU investigators, the court found the agent guilty under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (state treason committed under martial law).

As reported by Ukrinform earlier, the SBU detained an FSB agent who had been directing Russian strikes against Kyiv's energy infrastructure.
