UAV operators from 1st Mechanized Brigade repel Russian assault in Sumy region
The soldiers involved in the operation told Ukrinform about the details.
According to a UAV operator with the callsign "Kuzh," he spotted suspicious signatures near Ukrainian positions while returning from a reconnaissance mission.
"At first, I thought they were goats […] but when I got closer, I saw three Russians. Then I looked further – there were up to 16 people in total, at least as many as I could count," he said.
After relaying the information to command, the operator returned with strike equipment.
"I went to change the battery, attach the drop system and munitions, and then worked nonstop dropping grenades. Over several hours, some were wounded, some were killed," Kuzh added.
FPV drone pilots also joined the defense. One of them, with the callsign "Shkola," said speed was critical to prevent a breakthrough.
"Everything happened very quickly, so they wouldn't push through. I accounted for two killed and three wounded," he said.
A heavy strike drone crew also took part in the operation. An operator with the callsign "Tsyklop" said their unit received an order for immediate deployment while preparing equipment.
"We got the command for immediate reaction and takeoff of the bomber drone. Four mines were dropped, and as a result, a group of four to six enemy troops was stopped from advancing toward our positions," he said.
He stressed that the success of the operation was the result of coordinated work among all supporting units.
"It's a single organism working together. Its effectiveness determines the effectiveness of our infantry," Tsyklop said.
Thanks to the UAV operators, the enemy assault was repelled, with more than 20 Russian troops killed or wounded, and Ukrainian positions held without a breakthrough, the brigade stressed.
