Source in DIU: Russia urgently intensifies activity in Transnistria to divert Ukraine’s resources

Ukrinform
Russia is urgently stepping up its activities in Moldova's Transnistria region in order to divert Ukraine's resources away from the growing threat posed by this Russian enclave.

According to Ukrinform, this information comes from a source in the Main Intelligence Directorate (DIU) of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.

In particular, mobilization measures have been stepped up in the territory of the so-called PMR - reservists are being called up to the military formations of the quasi-state, and weapons are being taken out of storage.

The production of UAVs and training centers for drone operators have also been launched in Transnistria.

The Kremlin's active measures are aimed at strengthening Russia's presence in Transnistria, which Moscow is using to destabilize the situation in Moldova and create a point of tension on the border with Ukraine's southern regions, increasing the risk of sabotage groups infiltrating Ukraine.

To achieve its goals, Moscow is sending special service agents to Transnistria, whose task is to exacerbate the crisis, sow chaos through information operations, carry out provocations, and conduct sabotage.

After Gazprom stopped supplies in early 2025, Moldova's government saved Transnistria, which is dependent on Russian gas, from collapse by selling critical energy resources to the so-called PMR through Moldovagaz.

The Kremlin's current focus on Transnistria marks the beginning of Russia's hybrid operation related to the holding of the so-called “PMR presidential elections” in 2026. Russia's operation aims, in particular, to put Tiraspol back on the hook for free Russian gas, boost the image of pro-Russian leaders, and covertly build up the Russian military contingent in Transnistria so that, when the Kremlin needs it, all the accumulated forces and resources are ready for military escalation, the DIU noted.

As reported by Ukrinform, Ukraine and eight other countries have officially joined the restrictive measures approved by the European Union against the leadership of the Transnistrian region of Moldova.
