EU to discuss expanding Frontex's powers to counter drones — media

EU countries are considering plans to broaden the mandate of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, to help monitor airspace and protect critical infrastructure.

According to Ukrinform, Euractiv reports this citing confidential EU Council documents.

The discussion comes amid growing concern over a series of drone incursions into European airspace in recent months.

According to the document, EU capitals are debating whether Frontex should assume additional responsibilities to combat hybrid threats, from airspace violations to protecting strategic assets.

A revision of Frontex's mandate, scheduled for next year, was first announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen earlier this year.

Ambassadors are expected to discuss the matter at a technical meeting on November 5. At present, Frontex supports EU countries in managing their external borders by providing assistance on the ground, combating cross-border crime, gathering information, and assisting with return procedures.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, drones spotted over Belgian military bases were intended to spy on F-16 fighters and ammunition.
