According to Kozhemyako, Gudkov, the former commander of the 155th Separate Guards Naval Infantry Brigade, died "fulfilling his officer's duty alongside his comrades" in the Kursk region.

Gudkov's fellow marine, Nariman Shikhaliyev, also died alongside him.

According to Ukrainian military reports, the 155th Brigade took part in the capture of Bucha, Irpin, and Hostomel and may have been involved in the killings of Ukrainian civilians.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces say the brigade lost more than half of its personnel in battles around Kyiv. Journalists have calculated that by the end of 2023, this brigade suffered the highest losses among Russian forces during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In November 2024, the commander of Russia's South Group of Forces fighting in Ukraine was replaced. Lieutenant General Alexander Sanchik was appointed acting commander of the military group.
