Syrskyi on situation in Kursk region: Heavy fighting continues near Sudzha
Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi announced this on his Telegram channel, Ukrinform reports.
He said that in the Kursk region, the enemy is deploying airborne assault units and special operations forces in an attempt to breach Ukrainian defenses, push Ukrainian troops out of the region, and extend hostilities into the Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
Since the Kursk operation began on August 6, 2024, Russian forces have suffered over 54,900 casualties, including over 22,200 soldiers killed, 31,800 wounded, and 942 taken prisoner.
Additionally, around 2,100 units of Russian military equipment and weaponry have been destroyed or damaged, including 90 tanks,654 armored fighting vehicles, five multiple launch rocket systems, two air defense systems, a fighter jet, two helicopters, over 1,100 vehicles, 28 special equipment units, and nearly 1,500 drones.
Russian aircraft have conducted an unprecedented number of strikes on Russian territory. In particular, Sudzha has been nearly completely destroyed by Russian airstrikes.
"In the most difficult situations, my priority has been and remains the preservation of Ukrainian soldiers' lives. To achieve this, Defense Forces units, if necessary, maneuver to more advantageous positions. Primarily, drone capabilities are employed, along with artillery firepower. I have issued all the necessary orders for this," Syrskyi said.
He added that as of 18:00, Ukrainian forces repelled eight enemy assault attempts in the Kursk sector.
Despite increased pressure from Russian and North Korean forces, Syrskyi said that Ukrainian troops would continue to hold the Kursk front as long as it remains necessary and strategically justified.
