Second phase of “Easter exchange” returns defenders born in 2000s
This was reported by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War on the occasion of the return of 193 defenders, according to Ukrinform.
“Today’s event was a continuation of the ‘Easter exchange’ and the implementation of the relevant agreements.
What makes this exchange unique is that we were able to secure the release of young men born in the 2000s, as well as wounded defenders,” the statement reads.
It is noted that most of those released were illegally detained in Chechnya. Fabricated criminal cases were brought against some of them, which constitutes a violation of the Geneva Conventions.
Among the freed servicemen are representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including a significant number of paratroopers. Also returning home are servicemen from the Naval Forces, the Territorial Defense Forces, the National Guard of Ukraine, the National Police, the State Border Guard Service, and the State Special Transport Service. In addition to soldiers and sergeants, several officers were also released.
The released servicemen defended the country in the Luhansk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kursk sectors. The youngest defender is 24 years old. He was taken prisoner in the Donetsk sector in 2023. The oldest released defender is 60 years old. Two servicemen will celebrate their birthdays today on their home soil.
All those released will undergo a full medical examination, receive physical and psychological rehabilitation assistance, as well as all payments provided by the state. Ukraine will ensure the heroes’ reintegration into society after prolonged isolation.
The Coordination Headquarters expressed gratitude to the United States and the UAE for their assistance in organizing the exchange.
Commenting on the exchange, Head of the Office of the President Kyrylo Budanov emphasized that “we continue to free our own—no matter what.”
He welcomed all those freed from captivity back home and also addressed two soldiers celebrating their birthdays today. “Vadym! Ivan! I wish you a speedy recovery and good health! Thank you for your service and for defending Ukraine!” the Head of the Presidential Office noted.
Budanov emphasized that the government is working to “bring all our prisoners of war back to Ukraine, so that every family still waiting can hear the good news: ‘Finally home.’”
As reported by Ukrinform, 193 servicemen are returning to Ukraine as part of the exchange. The previous prisoner of war exchange took place on April 11. At that time, 175 defenders and seven civilians returned to Ukraine.
