Lithuania to build military training ground in Suwałki Gap area
This was reported to journalists by the Chief Adviser to the President, Deividas Matulionis, following the Defense Council meeting, according to Delfi.
“A decision has been made to approve the establishment of a brigade-sized training area in Kapčiamiestis in the Lazdijai municipality,” he said.
According to the Lithuanian army’s assessment, from both a military and security standpoint, the chosen location is the most suitable. It is part of the so-called Suwałki Gap, bordering Poland and Belarus. The defense of this corridor will receive special attention from Lithuania, Poland, and NATO, the presidential advisor added.
Matulionis emphasized that the establishment of the training ground will enhance security in this part of the country.
In addition, he noted that the area of the Tauragė training ground, near the Kaliningrad Region of Russia, will be doubled, expanding its territory to the Jurbarkas municipality.
As Ukrinform reported, on December 12, the Ministry of National Defense of Lithuania signed a memorandum with defense companies on industrial cooperation, under which Leopard 2 A8 battle tanks will be assembled and maintained in the country.
