The first case of cholera in six years reported in Poland
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by Polskie Radio.
Cholera was detected in an elderly patient in Stargard, West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The woman had not left the country.
The source of the infection is unknown.
"The patient required renal replacement therapy, which indicates severe dehydration, i.e., loss of fluids and electrolytes. At the moment, the patient is in a special isolation ward under the supervision of doctors. Treatment primarily involves antibiotics plus restoration of the disturbed water-electrolyte balance. This is the basis of treatment," explained Chief Sanitary Inspector Paweł Grzesiewski.
In total, about 20 people are in quarantine, including medical staff who had contact with the patient.
The management of the Stargard hospital has imposed a ban on visits to the internal medicine department.
Cholera is an acute infectious disease of the gastrointestinal tract caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with cholera bacteria. It causes diarrhea and vomiting. The last case in Poland before the one in Stargard was detected in 2019 in an Indian sailor whose ship arrived in Świnoujście.
As reported by Ukrinform, American doctors have confirmed that a resident of Arizona died of pneumonic plague.
