The Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression is observed annually on the third Sunday of May in Ukraine. On this day, the nation honors the memory of tens of thousands executed by the communist regime, and the hundreds of thousands imprisoned, exiled, or subjected to forced psychiatric treatment.
Bykivnia Forest, located on the outskirts of Kyiv, is one of the most well-known sites of mass burial. Between 15,000 and over 100,000 people executed by the NKVD's repressive apparatus are buried there. Among the victims are poet Mykhail Semenko, writer Maik Yohansen, artist Mykhailo Boichuk, and Metropolitan Vasyl Lypkivsky.
