Donbass movie by Sergei Loznitsa has received its world premiere at the 71st Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.

As the press service of the Arthouse Traffic Ukrainian production company reports, the movie opened the Un Certain Regard programme and will compete for its prize.

As noted, 15 movies take part in the Un Certain Regard. The jury is chaired by actor and director Benicio del Toro. The prize-winners will be announced at the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival on May 19.

The script of the film is based on the documentary materials. Director Sergei Loznitsa describes the events that took place in eastern Ukraine. People, who are forced to adapt to life in conditions when the institutions of power, family and professional ties break up, take the center stage. Donbas is the anti-war movie, whose heroes are victims of circumstances.

"I am happy that I will be able to share the movie with the most demanding, experienced and sensitive audience: the jury and the audience of the Cannes Film Festival. It is very important for me to draw the attention of politicians to the problem of Donbas. As far as I can tell, this is the main problem of our time. It’s not about a region, a country or a political system, but about the humanity and the civilization on the whole, about each of us today," Loznitsa said.

The movie was created in co-production of Ukraine, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Romania.
