US believes in possibility of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia despite war in Iran — Bloomberg
According to Ukrinform, Bloomberg reports this in an article.
"The US told allies last week that it still believes it can bring Russia and Ukraine to the table, though there's no movement for now and the sides remain far apart," the report says.
U.S. officials justified the decision to ease sanctions on Russia regarding oil sales, but said this step is temporary, according to a person familiar with the discussions who requested anonymity because the matter is not public.
At the same time, the key obstacle to reaching an agreement remains the issue of territories, Bloomberg notes.
Russia is not backing down from its demands, including the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from eastern territories that Moscow's forces have been unable to seize by force since 2014.
Negotiations between the parties are currently focused mainly on technical aspects of a possible ceasefire, while political decisions remain blocked. Nevertheless, despite the complex international context, the U.S. believes that the negotiation process between Ukraine and Russia remains possible, although still far from completion.
As Ukrinform reported, the ISW notes that successful Ukrainian strikes on Russian rear positions have intensified discussions within Russian military circles about the need to quickly end hostilities against Ukraine.
