Zelensky in Vilnius: International unity must guarantee real security for Ukraine and Europe
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized this while speaking during a memorial service honoring those who died in the January Uprising of 1863–1864 in Vilnius, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“Since February 24, Poland’s support for Ukraine has been unprecedented – never before at this scale in our shared history. Lithuania is with us – at an unprecedented level as well. All Baltic states are with us. Northern Europe is with us. Germany is one of the key defenders of life. France is with us. The United Kingdom is with us. Almost all of Central Europe is with us. Italy is with us. Spain and Portugal, the countries of Southern Europe, are with us. Romania and Moldova are with us. In 1863, the insurgents could not even dream of such unity – and today, that unity is working,” the Ukrainian President said.
He stressed that European politicians should value the fact that they represent free and independent states and do not have to act today as leaders of uprisings against empires or occupiers.
At the same time, Zelensky noted that it is too early to relax, as Russia’s war machine continues to operate and dictators near Europe are not growing weaker.
“Our call is simple: this unity must be 100 percent effective. Not halfway. Not for a few months a year. Not until the next elections in one European country or another. But fully effective. Not what is convenient. Not what feels acceptable. But as much as is required to work – so that there is no threat to Europe or to any of our nations,” the head of state added.
As reported by Ukrinform, Lithuania’s Migration Department stated on Wednesday, January 21, that last year the country recognized 1,721 citizens of Belarus and Russia as threats to national security, public order, or public health.
