Former congressman Ritter denies possibility of US seizing Greenland by force
He stated this in a comment to Ukrinform.
"People are saying that if the United States took Greenland by force, it would be the end of NATO. Let me tell you right now: the United States is not taking Greenland by force" Ritter stated.
He explained that President Donald Trump's administration views the Greenland issue as "a critical step forward in the battle with Russia and China, and in the battle for the Arctic and its resources."
He added that the United States is paying close attention to political dialogue with Denmark.
"Rubio is meeting with the Danes this week, so it's going to be interesting to see what evolves in terms of the future relationship between the United States and Greenland," he noted.
According to Ritter, a "copacetic arrangement" is expected to be concluded between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States, "and it will make Greenland a much different place — in terms of its mineral resources, its strategic location, and the battle over the Arctic."
"And it will actually strengthen NATO," he added.
Ritter also drew attention to the specifics of Trump's statements. "you take Trump seriously, not literally... When you try to understand Trump, you need to look at the directionality, not necessarily down in the weeds and the words," he explained.
As Ukrinform reported, in his recent comments Trump said he was ready to take control of Greenland "the hard way" if the authorities did not agree to transfer the island to the United States.
