Leaders of Coalition of Willing to discuss situation around Greenland in Paris – Tusk
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated this during a media briefing before departing for Paris for the meeting of Coalition leaders, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
Tusk noted that an unpredictable and previously unplanned topic at the Paris meeting, which is stirring strong emotions in Europe, would be Greenland.
He said that for Poland this issue was obvious and did not allow for double interpretation.
Tusk stressed that no NATO member should attack or threaten another member of the North Atlantic Treaty, as it would be absurd for conflicts or mutual aggressive actions to arise within the Alliance. He added that Poland strongly wanted all potential disputes or discussions to be resolved through friendly dialogue among NATO members. He emphasized that European solidarity and respect for the integrity of European states were fundamental principles, and therefore Denmark could certainly count on the solidarity of all of Europe, leaving him with no doubts on that score.
In this context, he said Poland would make every effort in the coming days and months to ensure that transatlantic unity, which is the foundation of NATO, does not suffer.
Tusk acknowledged that this was a difficult task requiring goodwill from all sides, but said he wanted it to be clear in Washington that any attempts to split or undermine the essence of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, would likely not be received positively by any European country, or at least that was his hope.
He added that Poland would be among the countries seeking to preserve the strategic European-American alliance, as it was the guarantor of security for the entire Western civilization.
As Ukrinform reported, Trump has repeatedly spoken about the possibility of annexing Greenland, arguing that it has a strategic location and natural resources. In particular, in an interview with The Atlantic, he said that "we really need Greenland", explaining this by the presence of Russian and Chinese military vessels in the region.
Denmark's ambassador to the United States, Jesper Moller-Sorensen, said that his country "expects full respect for territorial integrity", reacting to the circulation on social media of a map of Greenland colored in the colors of the U.S. flag.
Denmark's prime minister also called on Trump to stop threats regarding a possible seizure of Greenland.
Greenland is an autonomous constituent country within the Kingdom of Denmark, which has had its own self-government since 2009, while Denmark is responsible for defense and foreign policy. Geographically, the island belongs to North America, but politically it belongs to Europe.
