Costa confirms EU’s unwavering support for Ukraine amid new U.S. security strategy
This was stated by European Council President António Costa on X, Ukrinform reports.
“What I see is that there are so many people trying to undermine Europe. Why? Because the EU is strong. And we are working to make it even stronger,” Costa said.
He added that the EU has taken “bold steps” to build European defense and strengthen strategic autonomy.
“We have stood by Ukraine’s side, as its first and most steadfast supporter, since the start of the war,” the European Council president emphasized.
Costa also highlighted that the EU has developed and strengthened a network of global partners based on fair trade, shared prosperity, and the protection of the rules-based international order.
The statement came amid Costa’s speech today at the Jacques Delors Institute in Paris, where he responded to the publication of the new U.S. security strategy, describing the document as a “threat of interference in Europe’s political life.”
He noted that “the United States cannot replace European citizens in deciding which parties are good and which are bad.”
As reported, on December 5, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump published the National Security Strategy, which lists resolving the Russian-Ukrainian war as one of its priorities. According to the strategy text, the Trump administration disagrees with European officials, who have “unrealistic expectations regarding the war.”
