US making 'some changes' to peace plan – Rubio

Following the Geneva negotiations, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that some changes will be made to the U.S. "peace plan."

That is according to Sky News, Ukrinform reports.

Rubio said the meetings today had been "the most productive and meaningful" of the peace process so far for him.

He noted that the Washington's team is making "some changes" to the peace plan seemingly based on Ukrainian suggestions.

He added that there is still work to do, and they may have a further update later.

"We have a very good work product that was already built on a foundation of input from all the relative parties involved here, and we were able to go through some of those items now, point by point. And I think we've made good progress. Our teams have now gone to their rooms as we're working on some of the suggestions that were proffered to us, so we're working through, making some changes in the hopes of furthering narrowing the differences and getting closer to something that both Ukraine and obviously the United States are very comfortable with," Rubio said.

He stressed that any peace plan required Trump and Zelensky's sign off, and Russia to offer its take, but he was "comfortable" about that.

Earlier, U.S. media reported that the Trump administration had held secret consultations with the Kremlin to develop a new plan to stop the war in Ukraine. Axios reported that the plan consists of 28 points and is divided into four broad categories: peace in Ukraine, security guarantees, security in Europe, and the future of U.S. relations with Russia and Ukraine.

According to media reports, Kyiv is expected to give up Ukrainian-controlled areas of Donbas, reduce its army, and relinquish a significant portion of its weaponry. The plan envisages that the transfer of the remaining territories of Donbas would take place in exchange for U.S. security guarantees for Kyiv and Europe, though the mechanism for these guarantees is not clearly defined.

U.S. lawmakers said that during their conversation with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, he described the U.S. peace plan as a "wish list" for the Russians rather than a genuine proposal from Washington. Rubio later denied this, stating that the "peace proposal was authored by the U.S."
