Supporting Ukraine bargain compared to cost of Russian victory – Kallas

A reparations loan should become the main tool for strengthening Ukraine’s defense capability and a clear signal to Moscow that time is not on its side, while any peace plan can only succeed if it is supported by both Ukraine and Europe.

This was emphasized by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, summarizing discussions at the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, according to Ukrinform.

“Many ministers raised the financial support for Ukraine. The reparations loan is the most clear-cut way to sustain Ukraine’s defense. It is also the way to show Russia that time is not on their side. Supporting Ukraine is a bargain compared to the cost of Russian victory,” Kallas stated.

At the same time, she noted that the issue was not discussed in depth today.

“And it is true that there is an options paper on the table. Those countries that spoke for financing also expressed their support for the reparations loan and reiterated the urgency to move with that,” the EU High Representative explained, adding that Russia “fears this loan.”

Kallas also stressed that ministers remained “calm and firm” regarding the conditions of the previously publicized Russian-American “peace plan.”

“Because we have seen this before. And because, you know, different peace plans cannot work if Europeans and Ukrainians do not agree to this... This is our approach: for any peace plan to work, it needs Ukrainians and Europeans to agree,” the EU top-diplomat emphasized.

As Ukrinform reported, the EU will continue to strengthen measures against Russia’s shadow fleet, as these sanctions have already proven effective, reducing Russian crude oil exports by 30%.
