The Ukrainian delegation is participating in the 42nd Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), where it has called on member states to intensify pressure on Russia.

This was reported by the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development, according to Ukrinform.

“Due to Russia’s illegal invasion, Ukraine’s airspace remains closed, as daily missile and drone attacks pose a direct threat to passengers’ lives and the safety of international flights. Moreover, the aggressor continues to destroy aviation infrastructure and endanger international civil aviation. This is why we call on ICAO Member States to increase pressure on Russia, because only then can it be forced to stop undermining global aviation safety and end the war,” said Serhiy Derkach, Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine.

The 42nd Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization began on September 23 in Montreal, Canada. As ICAO’s highest decision-making body, the Assembly convenes every three years to set global civil aviation policy for the upcoming period.

The session will run until October 3. Decisions adopted during the Assembly will guide the ICAO Council, other organizational bodies, and all member states in their future work.

Over the next two weeks, the Assembly will examine a series of violations by the Russian Federation, including the illegal “dual” registration of aircraft leased from international companies, the operation of aircraft without valid airworthiness certificates, and the issuance of unauthorized certifications by Russian authorities.

Russia remains under ICAO’s “Significant Safety Concern” status. The ICAO Council has noted that Russia has taken no steps to address these violations and recommends maintaining the current Assembly resolution.

Separately, on Tuesday, September 23, the 80th anniversary session of the United Nations General Assembly opened in New York.
