Coalition of the Willing planning teams will meet with their U.S. counterparts in the coming days to further strengthen plans to deliver robust security guarantees for Ukraine and prepare for the deployment of a reassurance force if the hostilities end.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced this today following a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, which was attended by more than 30 international leaders, Ukrinform reports, citing a UK government press release.

Starmer briefed coalition participants on the outcome of his talks in Washington, noting that it was clear there was a real sense of unity and shared goal of securing a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.

The leaders also discussed how further pressure – including through sanctions – could be placed on Putin "until he showed he was ready to take serious action to end his illegal invasion."

Starmer said he looked forward to updating the group again soon, as further work progressed in the coming days and weeks.

On August 18, President Volodymyr Zelensky met with U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office for bilateral talks. Zelensky said he hoped that U.S. and European leaders would help find a diplomatic path to end the war and expressed expectations of a trilateral meeting between the leaders of Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia.

He also thanked Trump for his efforts to stop the killing and the war, as well as for supporting the meeting format with European leaders at the White House.

Later, an expanded-format meeting was held with the participation of the U.S. and Ukrainian presidents, along with European leaders who had arrived in Washington to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during her visit to Washington, said that European leaders, together with the U.S. president, are working to stop the bloodshed in Ukraine.

Earlier reports said that leaders of the Coalition of the Willing would meet online on Tuesday, August 19, to discuss the results of the Washington talks on Ukraine and the next steps.
