Berlin hopes Normandy summit will take place in near future

German diplomats believe that conditions are currently in place to hope for a meeting in the Normandy format in the foreseeable future.

German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Andrea Sasse said this at a briefing on Wednesday, January 19, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"It's not just a wish," Sasse said when asked if such a meeting was just a wish.

She noted that German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock during her visit to Kyiv and Moscow this week discussed the resumption of talks in the Normandy format and heard "clear signals and clear commitments on the Normandy format."

Berlin thus plans to continue working on the basis of these positions. However, the diplomat could not say anything about the specific dates and level of the meeting.

Baerbock visited Kyiv on January 17 and Moscow on January 18. In recent weeks, Berlin has been actively pushing for a revival of the Normandy format in order to return to the implementation of the Minsk agreements. German and French political advisors held separate meetings with negotiators in Russia and Ukraine. The Normandy summit was last held in December 2019.
