Zelensky says too early to talk about his second term

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that it is too early to talk about him running for a second term as president.

He said this at a press conference in Kyiv on Thursday, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"It is too early to answer," Zelensky said when asked about the likelihood of his run for a second term.

"Not even half of my term has passed. I think we will have time to do a lot of things. There are many promises and I do not want them to go down in history as promises. And my desire to run for a second term will coincide with the desire of society. I think that it will very much depend on the things I promised to do or have not done. Let's see how it goes," he said.

Zelensky added that even if he succeeds as president, he still wants to be better than his predecessors.

"I believe that Ukraine deserves every next president to be better than the previous one. I am sure that after me there will be a better president than me. And it is important that Ukraine does not look back, but that it looks only forward," he said.

Zelensky also noted that his decision to run for a second term would also depend on his family.

"It really depends on my family a little bit. I'm sorry, but I've become less sentimental, more pragmatic in these two years. Nevertheless, in addition to Ukraine, they occupy a big place in my life, in my heart, it will also depend very much on them," he said.

The President's Office said earlier that Zelensky had not yet decided whether he will participate in the next presidential election.

Last autumn, Deputy Head of the President's Office Kyrylo Tymoshenko suggested that Zelensky could run for a second presidential term, as he concluded that one presidential term was not enough to rebuild the country.

Zelensky said at a press conference in May 2020 that he would consider running for a second term if he saw strong support for his actions from the people.
