A co-chairman of Germany's Green Party, Robert Habeck, will visit Ukraine next week, Ukraine's Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk has told Ukrinform.

During a four-day visit on May 23-27, German delegates will hold meetings in Kyiv with the top leadership of the state, including the president. They will also visit eastern Ukraine.

"It is extremely important that right now, in the midst of the election campaign for the Bundestag, the co-chairman of the Greens, Robert Habeck, has accepted an invitation to make this historic visit to Ukraine without exaggeration. The visit of the parliamentary delegation of this party to Ukraine is a sign of support and solidarity with Ukraine," the ambassador said.

Melnyk recalled that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was the first foreign head of state to visit the headquarters of the Green Party on June 18, 2019, immediately after his inauguration, and meet with its leader, Habeck. Zelensky then invited him to visit Ukraine. It is from that time that a really close and trusting dialogue with the leadership of this party has been started, the ambassador added.

According to him, in recent months it has been possible to significantly intensify contacts with the co-chair of the Greens. In particular, Habeck visited the Ukrainian Embassy several times, the last time on May 18. He was very interested in the situation in Ukraine, the peace process, the prospects for Ukraine's membership in the EU and NATO, as well as the provision of defense weapons to Kyiv, Melnyk said.

"Although the position of the Greens on the future accession of our country to the European Union and the [North Atlantic] Alliance still remains quite restrained, we still see additional chances for significant progress on the European integration path after the parliamentary elections in Germany in September 2021," Melnyk said.
