UN member states condemn Russia's violation of human rights in occupied Crimea

They said this in a joint statement on the human rights situation in the temporarily occupied Crimea and unrestricted access for human rights monitoring mechanisms therein, the press service of the Foreign Ministry reported on September 15.   

"During the 45th session of the UN Human Rights Council (Geneva), UN member states in a Joint Statement on Crimea called on Russia as an occupying state to abide by its obligations under international humanitarian law, guarantee human rights and freedoms, and strictly comply with UN General Assembly resolutions on the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the human rights situation in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol," the report reads.

UN member states stressed the need for the Russian Federation to comply with the order of the International Court of Justice to lift the ban on the Mejlis as a representative body of the Crimean Tatar people and to provide conditions for teaching the Ukrainian language on the peninsula. UN member states also require from the occupying state to immediately ensure full and unhindered access to the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol for international monitoring missions, as stated in UN GA resolutions 71/205, 72/190, 73/263 and 74/168.

"Today in Geneva, the international community reaffirmed its unwavering support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine's borders, and condemned Russia's violation of human rights and international humanitarian law on the occupied peninsula," the Foreign Ministry stressed.
