The ambassadors of the G7 countries commented on the decision of Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Yakiv Smolii to resign, saying that undermining the independence of this institution could be a big step back.

“An independent National Bank is a foundational achievement for Ukraine that has reduced corruption, driven growth and rescued a failed banking sector,” reads a statement on the Twitter account of the U.S. Presidency of the G7 Ambassadors’ Support Group in Kyiv.

To undermine this crucial institution would be a big step back and jeopardize the credibility of and support for Ukraine‘s reforms, the ambassadors noted.

On July 1, NBU Governor Yakiv Smolii submitted a letter of resignation to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In turn, the Office of the President of Ukraine assured that the Board of the National Bank will continue its work on the principles of independence and professionalism.
