Ukraine welcomes UN Secretary-General’s statement on non-recognition of Crimea's annexation
Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Sergiy Kyslytsia said this in an exclusive comment to Ukrinform.
"Ukraine is grateful to Secretary-General António Guterres for confirming the UN's principled position on the non-recognition of the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation," Kyslytsia said.
According to the Ukrainian diplomat, the UN Secretary-General’s statement is of utmost importance ahead of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the UN Charter, which places primary responsibility on the Security Council for maintaining international peace and security. "This fundamental duty has not yet been realized in the issue of Ukraine, which continues to suffer from aggression by a permanent member of the UN Security Council," the diplomat noted.
In this regard, Kyslytsia emphasized: "Russia’s attempts to use various excuses to justify its aggression against Ukraine are self-defeating, and a change in the status of Crimea will never be recognized by international community."
At a June 25 press conference in New York, Secretary-General António Guterres outlined his position regarding Crimea. "For me, there is no question. I mean, we are clearly in favour of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and we have never recognized what has happened in Crimea [in 2014]," he said.
