Champagne to meet with UIA head to push for Flight PS752 compensation
Champagne said Thursday it will be only the second time the two have spoken since the crash that took the lives of all 176 on board, CTV News reports.
"When it comes to compensating the families, there are two types of compensation, there's the statutory compensation from the airline under the Warsaw Convention and I’ve made a plea to them at the time to accelerate that payment," Champagne told reporters in Ottawa on Thursday.
On January 8, Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 was shot down near Tehran by an Iranian surface-to-air missile. There were 176 people on board – nine crew members (all Ukrainians) and 167 passengers (citizens of Ukraine, Iran, Canada, Sweden, Afghanistan, Germany, and the UK).
On January 11, Iran admitted that its military had accidentally shot down the Ukrainian passenger jet. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) accepted full responsibility for the downing of the Ukrainian airliner.
