UK calls on Russia to release all Ukrainian political prisoners
“I welcome the long overdue return of Ukrainians imprisoned in the non-government controlled areas. President Zelensky had to make tough decisions to deliver Normandy 4 summit deal and bring them home. Time now for Russia to release all Ukrainian political prisoners held in Russia and Crimea,” British Ambassador to Ukraine Melinda Simmons posted on Twitter.
In another publication, Simmons underscored importance of bringing murderers of Ukrainians to justice.
“It remains important justice is pursued for all those responsible for serious crimes, including violence against Maidan protesters, and the Kharkiv attack in 2015,” Simmons wrote.
As reported, on December 29, the detainee exchange between Ukraine and the so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic” and “Luhansk People’s Republic” took place at the Mayorske entry-exit checkpoint in Donetsk region.
Seventy-six people returned to Ukraine. Ukraine transferred 127 detainees, being ready to transfer 141 people, but 14 of them refused to return to the militant-controlled territory.
