Latvia to open honorary consulate in Sloviansk
"An honorary consulate of the Republic of Latvia may appear in Donetsk region in the near future. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to Ukraine Juris Poikans stated this during his working visit. [...] The consulate is to be set up in Sloviansk," the report reads.
It notes that the ambassador said at a working meeting with Deputy Head of Donetsk Regional State Administration Vadym Filashkin that the Latvian side had completed the approval of candidates for the post of honorary consul in Donetsk region.
"The honorary consulate in Donetsk region will be a coordination center for the implementation of joint projects - educational, medical, humanitarian ones, etc. The consulate will also help deepen cultural exchange between our countries and will be a very good complement to the relations that have already been formed," Poikans said.
He stressed the importance of establishing close links between the cities of Latvia and Donetsk region.
"I believe that sooner or later the Donetsk region will reunite. Now we will begin work in the territory controlled by the legitimate Ukrainian authorities. The approval procedures have been completed by Latvia, and we are beginning to hand over the documents to the Ukrainian side. In fact, the issue of establishing the consulate is in the final stages," the ambassador said.
On September 9, a Latvian delegation, headed by Ambassador Juris Poikans, arrived in Donetsk and handed over humanitarian cargo to residents of the region living near the contact line.
