The first meeting between Ukrainian and U.S. Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump will be meaningful in terms of discussion and successful as the two countries share many interests and aspirations, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State George Kent has told Ukrinform.

"I think the interests of our two countries are clear," he said when asked about the expectations of a meeting between the two presidents on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly this month.

He specified that it was a matter of mutual support in business and national security for Ukraine and the United States.

"So there are lots to talk about and I'm sure when our leaders meet, it will be a successful meeting," Kent said.

He also commented on the U.S. side's expectations of a change in government in Ukraine.

"The new government is formed, the new Rada is seated, and president Zelensky and his party won a very clear democratic mandate. Now the difficult part comes to govern to make decisions to make changes in the country," the U.S. diplomat said.

He said that the United States is a supportive partner for Ukraine.

"We want Ukraine to succeed. We want it to be economically prosperous, democratically accountable with institutions that serve the Ukrainian people, and secure in its territorial borders, all of it - Crimea, Donbas, everywhere in Ukraine," Kent said.

He stressed that the main task for the new government in Ukraine was to make decisions that would meet the expectations of the Ukrainian people.

In addition, Kent noted that President Zelensky had presented an ambitious reform program. He said that the United States would support these reforms.
