Poland’s Permanent Representative to UN: Ukraine among Security Council priorities

Ukrinform
Poland’s idea of creating the position of special envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Ukraine was part of the search for creative solutions but has no progress so far.

“As for the appointment of a special envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Ukraine, this decision should be approved not only by Poland. Such an issue is not included in the agenda of the Security Council, which you see before you, because this decision must be made by the UN Secretariat, of course, with the consent of the Ukrainian government,” Poland’s Permanent Representative to UN Joanna Wronecka said answering a question from an Ukrinform correspondent at a briefing dedicated to Poland's one-month presidency of the UN Security Council.

She added that Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz mentioned the idea of a special UN envoy for Ukraine speaking to reporters in Warsaw on July 29 but that was likely to be an attempt of the minister to “search for creative ways.”

Answering a question from an Italian journalist, Wronecka confirmed that Ukraine remains among the priorities of Poland's one-month presidency of the UN Security Council. In particular, the letter of the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN S/2014/136 is included in the agenda, which means "we can offer to hold a meeting [of the UN Security Council on Ukraine] any time."
