Maas: Berlin and Paris to support reforms of Zelensky
“It’s important for me to go to Kyiv right after President Zelensky assumed office, along with my French counterpart, to make it clear that Germany and France are not diminishing their obligations towards Ukraine, but quite the opposite,” Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Heiko Maas said before flying to Kyiv, the German Foreign Ministry reports.
He noted that Ukrainians have high hopes for the election of the new President.
“We want to offer President Zelensky our support in making these hopes come true,” Maas said. For this, he said, further reforms are needed, especially in the fight against corruption.
People in the east of Ukraine need peace finally, the German foreign minister added.
“The dynamics generated by the elections can provide an opportunity to break the deadlock and, finally, implement the peace plan of the Minsk agreements,” Maas said.
Germany and France, he noted, are willing to do everything possible to help do this. They intend to demand that Russia make a constructive contribution.
As reported, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian will pay a visit to Kyiv to meet with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin.
