UN Secretary-General António Guterres wrote a letter to Ukrainian President-elect Volodymyr Zelensky, in which he expressed support for the peaceful settlement of the situation in eastern Ukraine and assured Ukraine of the UN support.

This is stated in the letter of May 13, available to Ukrinform.

“I would like to extend my warm congratulations and best wishes on your election as President of Ukraine,” the document says.

The UN Secretary-General expressed confidence that, under Zelensky’s presidency, Ukraine would continue the excellent relationship with the United Nations. According to him, the UN Resident Coordinator in Kyiv, along with the Country Team, stands ready to assist Ukraine in fulfilling the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and in implementing the reform agenda of the country.

“I take this opportunity to underscore the full support of the United Nations for the crucial efforts of the Normandy Four, the Trilateral Contact Group and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe related to resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine. I urge all parties to revitalize diplomatic efforts in the spirit of constructive dialogue, with a view to implementing the Minsk agreements,” he added.

Guterres once again stressed that “the United Nations is committed to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine within internationally recognized borders.”

“I wish you every success in carrying out your important responsibilities and assure you that the UN stands ready to support you in this endeavour,” the UN Secretary-General noted.
