Canada preparing new sanctions against Russia

Canada is expected to expand sanctions against Russia in 2019.

Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada Andriy Shevchenko said this in an interview with Ukrinform.

“At this moment, the list of Canadian sanctions imposed on Russians and separatists from eastern Ukraine and Crimea is quite long. Canada remains one of the leaders among countries that actively use the tool of sanctions. But we know that our Canadian colleagues seriously think about new steps in this direction,” Shevchenko said.

According to him, the recently adopted “Magnitsky law” will be able to facilitate the introduction of new sanctions. “We hope that this law will increase the pressure on Russians who participated in illegal criminal trials against Ukrainian political prisoners, the prosecution of Crimean Tatars and the like. I think there is a high probability that we will see more sanctions pressure from Canada this year,” the ambassador said.

He added that Global Affairs Canada created a special department that deals with imposition of sanctions. “We hope that this will allow Canada to actively use the tool of sanctions to restore the rule of law in the world,” Shevchenko said.
