Poroshenko, Volker discuss threats posed by Russia’s actions

“The parties discussed the consequences of Russia’s act of aggression in the Azov-Kerch water area and the existing threats to regional security. The importance of a powerful response from the world to this act of aggression against Ukraine was emphasized in order to counter the creeping occupation of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait by the Kremlin,” the press service of the Head of State reports.

As noted, Poroshenko and Volker coordinated the approaches to extension of the international pressure on Russia, which should ensure clear respect for the freedom of navigation as well as the immediate and unconditional release of the seized sailors and ships of Ukraine.

The parties also discussed the latest developments in Donbas. They emphasized the importance of further coordinated actions on the prospects for deployment of a multinational peacekeeping mission under the UN mandate throughout the occupied Donbas area, the President’s press service reports.

“The interlocutors expressed confidence that international sanctions against Russia and the prospects for their strengthening, including over the act of aggression in the Kerch Strait, remain an important element of peaceful settlement of the situation and deterring of Russian aggression against Ukraine,” the statement reads.

Moreover, important attention was paid to the prospects of strengthening the strategic partnership between Ukraine and the USA, cooperation in the field of security and defense, as well as support for the further implementation of reforms in Ukraine.

Kurt Volker commended the IMF decision on providing Ukraine with the next tranche of macro-financial assistance, which is a sign of the success of Ukrainian reforms.

The President of Ukraine thanked for the three resolutions adopted by the US Congress, including those related to the Sea of Azov and the Holodomor.
