Polish FM Czaputowicz: Sanctions against Russia must be effective

Sanctions against Russia over its violation of the international law, in particular in the context of aggression in Ukraine, must be effective.

“We believe that sanctions are an appropriate method in a situation when the international law is being violated. We need to think about how to impose sanctions so that they are effective, have impact and yield real results,” Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said in a commentary to journalists in London before the consultations of the foreign ministers of the UK, the Visegrad Group countries (Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary), Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Slovenia, Polsatnews.pl reports.

According to him, it is a question of an adequate determination of threat as well as of persons and companies it comes from. “Then the sanctions will be more painful,” Czaputowicz noted.

The Polish Foreign Minister noted that European leaders remained concerned about the actions of Russia in Ukraine as well as interference in the internal affairs of democratic countries, in particular in the context of poisoning of retired Russian military intelligence officer Sergei Skripal in the UK.
