The Verkhovna Rada has adopted a law defining the procedure for the provision of housing or compensation for military personnel who were serving in Crimea, the city of Sevastopol, in Donbass, which were recognized as temporarily occupied, and continue to serve in Ukraine's military formations.

A total of 269 MPs voted in favor of the adoption of bill No. 8394 introducing amendments to Article 12 of the Law of Ukraine on social and legal protection of servicemen and their family members, with at least 226 votes required, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to the law, servicepersons who served in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the cities of Sevastopol, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which were recognized as temporarily occupied, and who continue to serve in the military formations of Ukraine, as well as members of their families living with them and received the status of internally displaced persons in accordance with the requirements of this article, were provided with office dwellings or living quarters for permanent residence in such territories or have private ownership of residential premises located in such territories, if the ownership of them was acquired in accordance with the laws of Ukraine, and who arrived in another territory of Ukraine, are provided with living quarters or, at their request, get monetary compensation.

It is established that the waiver of the right to own a living space located in the temporarily occupied territories of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the cities of Sevastopol, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which is privately owned by such categories of persons, is carried out in the order determined by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

According to the law, those persons who, on the date of the beginning of the temporary occupation of the abovementioned territories determined by the legislation, were registered with the persons who need the improvement of living conditions, are provided with living quarters, taking into account the previous time of stay in the housing waiting list in the order determined by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

The law will come into force on January 1, 2019.
