Presidents of Ukraine and Estonia discuss steps to release Kremlin’s political prisoners
"Petro Poroshenko and Kersti Kaljulaid, who became the first leader of a foreign state to visit the delimitation line in eastern Ukraine in May 2018, discussed the development of the security situation caused by the ongoing military aggression of the Russian Federation. The parties coordinated approaches to combat hybrid challenges from the Russian side, as well as urgent joint steps to liberate Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia," the press service of the Ukrainian Head of State reports.
Moreover, the leaders discussed the topical issues of bilateral agenda, including further development of trade, economic and investment cooperation.
Poroshenko also thanked Estonia and personally President Kaljulaid for the constant political support for Ukraine and active practical assistance, including through the implementation of specific projects on restoration of the infrastructure in eastern Ukraine.
As a reminder, about 70 Ukrainian political prisoners are held in Russia and in the occupied Crimea, including Ukrinform correspondent Roman Sushchenko, who was sentenced to 12 years in a maximum security penal colony on trumped-up charges of espionage.
