Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has held a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel following her talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the press service of the head of the Ukrainian state has reported.

"Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had a telephone conversation with German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel," the report says.

It notes that the chancellor informed Poroshenko about the results of her talks with the Russian president in Germany on August 19.

Poroshenko, in turn, called for the intensification of efforts to free Ukrainian hostages who are illegally held in Russia and in Russian-occupied territories.

Poroshenko and Merkel agreed to continue consultations at the level of foreign ministers of the Normandy format regarding a UN peacekeeping mission in the occupied part of the Donbas.

In addition, they discussed a number of issues on the bilateral agenda and agreed to continue contacts at the highest level.
