The main objective of the decentralization reform being carried out in Ukraine is to improve the quality of life of citizens, and this is the task that city mayors should work on.

This was stated by Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman during the International Mayors Summit in Kyiv, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“People should understand why resources, opportunities and powers have been transferred to regions - so that to improve the quality of life in communities. Cities should be comfortable to live in. This is the key objective of decentralization in terms of investments and intellectual decisions,” Groysman said.

According to him, city mayors and united communities by joint efforts should change all spheres of life in their regions so that to achieve this goal.

"The process has been launched in the country. We transferred UAH 100 billion from the central budget to the local government so that communities can have a resource. We gave the instrument so that inefficient communities can unite and become stronger together," the prime minister said.

The International Mayors Summit (IMS) was established in 2016 as a platform to exchange experience for local government leaders and foreign experts in local government development. It unites mayors from all over the world and offers a chance to discuss modern trends in city development, innovations, best international practices and experience of municipal government and share stories of success of Ukrainian cities in various fields.

The summit is organized by the Western NIS Enterprise Fund with the support of the prime minister of Ukraine and the mayor of Kyiv.
