EU does not recognise so-called ‘elections’ in annexed Crimea

Ukrinform
The European Union does not recognise the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia and therefore does not recognise the holding of elections in the Crimean peninsula.

This is said in the statement of the European External Action Service, available to an Ukrinform own correspondent in Brussels.

"Regional and local elections were held in the Russian Federation on 10 September. Gubernatorial elections also took place in Sevastopol. The European Union has not recognised the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by the Russian Federation and therefore does not recognise the holding of elections in the Crimean peninsula," the statement reads.

It is noted that anybody elected in the Crimean peninsula claiming to "represent" Crimea and Sevastopol will not be recognised as representatives of those territories, which are Ukrainian.

"The European Union remains unwavering in its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine," the European External Action Service states.
