Moscow’s failure to comply with the resolution of the UN General Assembly on Crimea, which provides for access of the UN human rights monitors to the territory of the occupied peninsula, will create yet another powerful lever of pressure on the Russian Federation.

Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko said this in an interview with Apostrophe media outlet.

"This is not just an idea, this is the decision, the resolution of the General Assembly, which was adopted last year and created the mechanism for monitoring the observance of human rights in Crimea on part of the occupying power. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin attended the opening session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, delivered a speech on this issue, had a meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and they agreed on what UN system will do in order to implement this resolution," Yelchenko said.

The Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations noted that the first step was the admission of UN human rights monitors to the territory of Crimea. According to Yelchenko, if Russia did not give such permission, and such logic of actions can be foreseen, another powerful lever of pressure on Russia for refusing to comply with the decision of the General Assembly would appear.
