Ukraine actively participating in global climate deal
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said in his speech at the 21st UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“Today we should give an impetus to reaching a compromise on the new global climate agreement so that it comes into force in 2020. Ukraine is actively participating in the drawing up of this key document,” the President said.
Thus, according to the President, the document should be based on several principles. First, the new agreement should be applicable to all countries.
Second, differentiation in this agreement must be based on justified economic and social indicators as well as flexible and legally binding. Third, it must provide market and non-market instruments to meet obligations, and every country must have equal and indiscriminate access to these instruments.
At the same time, Poroshenko stressed that the agreement should stipulate the strengthening of international cooperation regarding the adjustment to climate change, including exchange of information on the best available instruments and technologies.
“We have a lot of problems – terrorism, wars, migrations, but only one problem makes us equal and vulnerable. This is the problem of climate change. Solving it - is a test for all nations. Let's not forget the old truth: ‘A house divided within itself won't stand’. The Earth is our house. And at least this time it cannot be ‘divided within", the head of state noted.
