UN to discuss Russia's violations of Budapest Memorandum

Ukrinform
KYIV, April 23 /Ukrinform/. Violation of the Budapest Memorandum by Russia concerning its aggression against Ukraine is to be considered at the international conference on implementation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which starts at the UN Headquarters in New York on April 27.

U.S. Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller said this on Wednesday in Washington, an Ukrinform correspondent has reported.

"The nuclear states [signatories to the Budapest Memorandum] in a wide range confirmed that the heroic decision of Ukraine to renounce nuclear weapons in 1993-1994 in fact meant that Ukraine was not supposed to lose its national security," the Under Secretary noted.

That is why, she said, the US is concerned that "the Russian Federation does not recognize its obligations under the Budapest memorandum, in fact, neglects them since it violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine."
