McCain: current situation in Ukraine could end very quickly
John McCain told about the conditions under which it would be possible in an interview with Ukrainian news broadcaster TSN.Tyzhden on Sunday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
According to him, he way to stop Putin is to be found in a phrase used by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan - "peace through strength."
"We show our strength, we can help Ukraine to protect itself, and we send NATO forces in the countries, which are located nearby - Poland, Romania, the Baltics, and others. And here we give a very clear message to Vladimir Putin - the price he will pay for the aggression is above the goals that he set,” McCain said.
He noted that Putin must understand who he is. "He is an old KGB apparatus worker who, in his own words, wants to restore the Russian empire. And, first of all, he sees in Ukraine a key element, because Russia came from Kyiv," McCain said, adding that while Ukraine carries out reforms, the current situation could end very quickly.
U.S. Senator reiterated that in order to win the war in the east of Ukraine, the United States must give the Ukrainians weapons. "It is criminal not to provide the Ukrainian military with weapons with which they can defend themselves. And it is a shameful chapter in American history, and the U.S. president who has refused to help people who are fighting for their survival," McCain said.
He stressed that the United States must act decisively in this situation, because it leads and Europe will act under its example.
