European Union leaders are considering creating a new Russian-language television channel aimed at combating Russian propaganda.

KYIV, January 3 /Ukrinform/. European Union leaders are considering creating a new Russian-language television channel aimed at combating Russian propaganda.

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said this in an interview with BuzzFeed News.

The minister said that for the past few years Russian television had ceased to be an example of professional journalistic work.

"Russian TV, particularly for the last couple of years, has been very aggressive in what can no longer be considered normal news or normal journalism, but is more information warfare and propaganda," he said.

According to the minister, the proposal being discussed is "to invest jointly in alternative sources of information - not alternative propaganda sources, but an alternative normal European TV channel, with entertainment, with news, but with very factually accurate news."

He also said that between 13 and 15 EU member states had informally expressed support for the idea.

According to the minister, this initiative is especially important to Latvia and Estonia, where quite a great number of Russian-speaking residents live.
