Ukrainian will be sole state language in Ukraine - president
KYIV, June 25 /Ukrinform/. Ukrainian has been and will remain the only state language in the country.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said this at a meeting with representatives of local and state government agencies and in Kyiv on Wednesday, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.
"The Ukrainian language has been and will remain the only state constitutional language of Ukraine, but I separately emphasize that members of communities will have the right to freely use all other languages, including Russian, on a par with the state language," he said.
He urged politicians not to speculate on language and cultural issues. "I want linguistic and cultural issues to never split Ukraine and not to be used by pseudo-politicians to annoy people. These are your powers and the community itself has to determine which songs to sing, who lay flowers at the monuments and which language to speak," the president said.
