Melnychenko's lawyer unaware whether ex-major cooperates with prosecutors in Shcherban case
KYIV, October 12 /UKRINFORM/. The lawyer of Mykola Melnychenko, Mykola Nedilko, is not aware whether or not the ex-major gives evidence at the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine within the investigation into the murder of Yevhen Shcherban.
The lawyer said this at a press conference on Friday, in response to questions from journalists.
"I do not know anything about that. Nobody informs me as Melnychenko's defender - neither Melnychenko himself, nor the Prosecutor General's Office. If I am officially informed on this matter and allowed to disclose this information, I'll answer the question," Nedilko said.
He advised journalists to address this question to Melnychenko personally through his official website.
Asked about the possibility of Melnychenko's return to Ukraine, Nedilko reminded of Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district court ruling on Melnychenko's detention and taking him to court during two days for addressing the issue of his arrest.
"As soon as Melnychenko comes to Ukraine, he will be detained and taken to court, and if the court decides to take him into custody, then Mykola Ivanovych will go to jail, most likely to Lukianivka. Under such conditions, now I personally do not see any reason that he would come here today or tomorrow," the lawyer said.
As reported, the former major of the State Guard Department, Mykola Melnychenko accuses former Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko of organizing the murder of businessman and MP Yevhen Shcherban in 1996, and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and Lazarenko's business partner Petro Kyrychenko of paying for the killer's services. Melnychenko wrote about this on his Facebook page. He also claims that he is aware of the circumstances of the investigation into this crime from the conversations he had heard in the office of Leonid Kuchma.
