Merkel calls on EU, Ukraine and Russia to settle Transdniestrian problem
KYIV, August 22 /UKRINFORM/. The European Union, Ukraine, Russia and the United States should not forget about the existence of the Transdniestrian conflict, by taking effective steps on its settlement.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced this at a joint press conference with Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat in Chisinau on Wednesday, a UKRINFORM correspondent in Moldova reported.
"The parties involved in the settlement of the Transdniestrian problem, as well as all EU countries, Ukraine and Russia, must show patience and not forget about the existence of the Transdniestrian problem, taking effective measures to resolve it," Merkel said.
The chancellor praised the effectiveness of the work of the current 5+2 format (Moldova, Transdniestria, Russia, Ukraine, the OSCE, the EU and the U.S.) and expressed hope for the "deepening of the dialogue during the upcoming round of negotiations to be held in Vienna in mid-September 2012."
German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived on a one-day visit to Moldova on Wednesday. During the visit, the chancellor will meet with the leadership of the Republic of Moldova, the leaders of parliamentary political parties and make a public address to the citizens of Moldova.
